Artist Statement

What makes a woman go from being a pediatric nurse, then research scholar as a cultural anthropologist, to become a nature photographer? Following one’s heart, of course! Wandering in National Parks and wilderness, being in the presence of wild creatures, and admiring the labor of love of gardeners who have created extraordinary refuges of beauty bring great joy to this artist. When first taking up the camera in 1995, she was moved to record this beauty so that it can be shared with others.
Her images have been published in a variety of magazines such as TIME, Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publications, Alaska Magazine, Alaska Geographic, Popular Photography, Outdoor Photographer, and in many Best of Photography annuals. Her prints have hung in numerous juried exhibits. She is currently represented by Alaska Stock, a commercial stock image company located in Alaska where she spent more than 20 years in residence. Julie now resides in Sandia Park in the mountains east of Albuquerque. She contributed images to the Albuquerque Tribune in collaboration with staff at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden for a monthly full-page feature on the garden for several years following her move to New Mexico in 2003.
